There are many opportunities in Jakarta for children who enjoy sports or wish to try something new. Many of the International schools will offer extra-curricular activites for their students and some of these activites may be open to non-attending students.

The Youth Sports Council (YSCJ) at Jakarta International School (JIS)
The YSCJ is an independent association of community sports program designed to enhance the athletic abilities and enjoyment of sports for registered players. Sports include basketball, cricket, netball, soccer, gymnastics and swimming. The YSCJ is an excellent opportunity for students and parents to meet people with shared interests from outside their own school communities. In order to register for a YSCJ sport, parents must first become a member and then enrol their children. Once enrolled, you can register for each sport through the website.

Basketball

Hoops Arena
For all budding basketball fans, this is the place to be. Opened late 2011 in Kemang, at last you can meet up with your friends and shoot some baskets indoors! There is an enclosed full-sized court and half-sized court, and a smaller open court especially for the little ones. The basket heights are adjustable and the flooring has been imported from America.

You can also sign up for the Hoops Academy  to learn all the skills needed,8-17 years old. Sessions are held on Saturdays and Sundays from 09.00-11.00. The head coach, Mr.Dana Pandawa, is professionally trained and speaks excellent English; he also coaches at some of the International schools in Jakarta. Sessions are held on Saturdays and Sundays from 09.00-11.00. NOTE-Sports shoes MUST be worn on the courts.

Food and beverages are available which you can enjoy whilst watching the mega TV, showing screenings of professional matches. There is also a shop selling clothes and original Jordan brand basketball shoes (the only place to get them in Jakarta) No small sizes available. Showers are also available for your use. This would be a great location for a birthday party, you can bring your own cake otherwise must use the restaurants  on site.

Diving

Divemasters (previously know as Aquasport)
Aquasport is a modern diving facility complete with classrooms and a 4-meter-deep pool. They offer two classes for children of 8 years and up. The first, called Bubblemaker, is a 4-hour session that introduces children to the novelty of breathing under water. The second, called Seal Team, offers a more in-depth programme. Also offered onsite, is a pro-shop where masks, fins, and wet suits can be purchased. They have smaller masks, fins, and snorkels for children age three to five. Aquasport also offers an Emergency First Response Care for children class that teaches emergency care for injured or ill children, as well as a CPR and First Aid Course. The usual course fee for these programmes is $110. They will also do re-training in these areas at a cost of about $85.

Supreme Gymnastics
A parent run, non-profit organisation which offers classes for all levels of interest from beginner to competitive. Boys and girls from age 5 upwards are able to participate in the classes. These are held in the gym at the Pondok Indah Elementary School Campus (PIE) of the Jakarta International School (JIS), after school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is not necessary to be a student of JIS to enrol. However, all classes are subject to a waiting list and priority is given to JIS students. For non JIS students it can be a long wait for a place, 12 months or more!

A trip to Arthayasa Stables makes a nice get away from the city. The stables are well run and clean with the senior riding instructors internationally certified. You are recommended booking the pony rides and lessons in advance. Lessons are for over six year olds while pony rides are available for younger children.

Ice Skating

Skyrink
A lovely, clean and professionally run ice rink, Skyrink, is the largest ice skating rink in South East Asia. Children above the age of four are permitted though they do consider younger kids too. They provide the ice skates once you’ve bought the coupon but do remember to take a jacket or sweater for the kids and yourself because it is cold! Probably the coldest place in Jakarta. Monday to Friday is cheaper than the weekends and public holidays Rp. 34,000 for the entire day. Otherwise it’s Rp. 38,000 for 2 hours and Rp 8,000 for each additional hour thereafter. The first ice cleaning session is at 11 a.m. and the rink will be closed to skaters for 20-30 minutes so it is advisable to get there for opening at 9 a.m. then leave at 11 a.m. when the ice is cleaned, that way you miss the crowds at weekends, although it never gets unbearable busy. Ice cleaning is approximately every 2 hours at weekends.

Junior Rugby - Season now over, will restart Nov 2012, dates to be announced
For the past 7 years we have run a junior rugby programme open to all children from the ages of 5 years upwards that have an interest in learning and playing rugby. The children that join the programme come from many schools around Jakarta.

Our programme is loosely based on the Smart rugby training programme and we are reliant on parent coaches. Our aim is to mirror the very successful Jakarta Youth Soccer League having mixed equal strength teams based on age groups playing in a non competitive environment that develops the ethos of team sports and community engagement.

We accommodate beginners and experienced players in all age groups and seek to provide a fun experience, whilst learning the skills of the game. We look to moving the children into game situtions over a period of 4 to 6 weeks.
The junior rugby programme has evolved from the adults section of the rugby club based at International Sports Club Indonesia (ISCI).

The juniors do tour and we have travelled to KL in 2007, 2008 & 2010 and to Bali in 2009. There are large tournaments run in KL and Singapore for age groups from U8 to U19 each year and we would like to regularly attend these tournaments as well as encourage others to travel to Jakarta with the idea of a home and away series developing.

Training costs Rp 600,000 for the season. Registration is open all season.

Jakarta Youth Soccer
A well organised parent-run community activity open to all. For boys and girls aged 5-14. The dates are usually advertised in school newsletters. The cost is Rp.500,000 which includes full soccer kit and trophy at the end of the league. Matches are played at JIS on Saturdays and occasionally Sundays from September to early November with one training night mid-week. Registration is online via their website.

Blue Marlins Swim Team at the American Club (AERA)
A small non-competitive swim club designed to improve endurance and technique. The sessions are about 15 weeks long, with parents being able to choose between having their child swim once, twice, or three times a week. The coach is excellent at teaching children proper stroke techniques. As long as your child is comfortable in the water, they do not have to know any proper swim strokes before joining the team.
